DUSHANBE

In accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Tajikistan, Dushanbe is the capital of the Republic, its administrative center.
Dushanbe is located in a picturesque valley between the rivers of Varzob and Kofarnikhon. Today, according to the latest census, the population of the city is above 536,000 people.
Dushanbe is a political, industrial, scientific, historical and cultural center of the country. Presidential palace, Parliament of the Republic of Tajikistan, all ministries and institutions, offices of commercial banks and republican concerns are situated here. Dushanbe is the position of international embassies in the RT, offices of international financial and humanitarian organizations.
The city is divided into five districts: Frunzensky I, Frunzensky II, Ismoila Somoni, Zheleznodorozhny, and Central district. Executive authority of the city is represented by the city Khukumat headed by Mayor. According to its status, Dushanbe is a city of the Republican subordination.
The city was built during the Soviet times in place of three villages, the biggest of which was called Diushanbe. In Tajik, Dushanbe means Monday that had been a market day here. In 1924 the city got the status of the capital of the Tajik Autonomous Republic. Since 1929, Dushanbe becomes the capital of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic (TSSR) - the fact that greatly contributed to its population growth and the development of different kinds of enterprises. The city is expanding with wide straight streets, public libraries, parks and gardens, and, for most, with the exception of its central part, one-storied buildings for the fear of the earthquake danger.
Dushanbe sister-cities are Moscow (Russia), Lusaka (Zambia), Bolder (USA), Sana (Yemen), Klagenfurt (Austria), Lahore (Pakistan).
