DUSHANBE, August 19, 2016, Asia-Plus – On Thursday August 18, The United States Ambassador to Tajikistan, Elisabeth Millard, General-Lieutenant Rajabali Rahmonali of the Border Guard Forces of Tajikistan, and other U.S. and Tajik officials, attended the handover ceremony of $12 million dollars’ worth of U.S. equipment to Tajikistan’s Border Guard Agency. According to the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe, the United States government donated $9 million dollars of communication equipment and $3 million dollars of J8 Jeep Wranglers.
DUSHANBE, August 17, 2016, Asia-Plus -- An agricultural battalion has been set up in Tajikistan’s armed forces. An official ceremony of the establishment of the agricultural battalion that took place in Vahdat Township on August 17 was attended by Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda. An official source in the Tajik government says the new battalion will provide units of the Tajik national army with food products that had previously been imported into the country from abroad.
DUSHANBE, August 16, 2016, Asia-Plus – Defense Ministry delegations from the member nations of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) have gathered in the Armenian capital of Yerevan for the CSTO defense ministers’ meeting that is being held there today. Tajikistan is represented at the meeting by Deputy Defense Minister, Colonel Abdulhoshim Ghulomzoda, an official source at the Ministry of Defense (MoD) told Asia-Plus in an interview.
DUSHANBE, August 12, 2016, Asia-Plus – A task force of the Ministry of Defense of Tajikistan (MoD) will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization anti-terrorism drill, dubbed Peace Mission 2016, which will take place in Kyrgyzstan’s western region of Issyk-Kul from September 6-13, Colonel Faridoun Mahmadalizoda, a spokesman for a MoD, told Asia-Plus in an interview. According to him, Tajik task force will be led by Colonel Jahongir Nazaraiyev, the chief of the Staff of the Mobile Troops of the Tajik Defense Ministry.
DUSHANBE, August 11, 2016, Asia-Plus – One more Tajik soldier has died and his relatives say he died after being severely beaten. The 18-year-old Ramazon Zabirov from the Hisor district had served in border unit in Sughd’s Zafarobod district. His body was handed over to his parents on August 7 and his relatives say Ramazon died after being severely beaten.
DUSHANBE, August 10, 2016, Asia-Plus – Tajik border guards have reportedly thwarted a group of armed drug traffickers attempting to illegally cross the Afghan-Tajik border in the area patrolled by one of frontier posts of the Shouroobod border unit. According to the press service of the Main Border Guard Directorate at the State Committee for National Security (SCNS), Tajik border guards on a routine patrol spotted a group of armed drug traffickers numbering 4-5 people who were illegally crossing the border river in the Shohin (formerly Shouroobod) district Tuesday night.
KHUJAND, August 9, 2016, Asia-Plus -- A joint training was conducted for commanders of frontier posts deployed along the Isfara-Batken stretch of Tajikistan’s common border with Kyrgyzstan at the end of the last week. During a two-day training that took place in Batken and Leilek border units in Kyrgyzstan, the border officers were trained in how to prevent border incidents in case of tensions between border communities and localize conflict situations without use of weapons, according to Kyrgyz border service’s press center.
DUSHANBE, August 8, 2016, Asia-Plus – At the end ofthe last week, Tajik border guards have reportedly thwarted a group of armed drug traffickers attempting to illegally cross the Tajik-Afghan border in the area patrolled by the Panj border unit. As a result of skirmish, one of trespassers – Afghan national Abdurahman waladi Amanboy – was reportedly killed and nearly 20 kilograms of hashish and 2.2 kilograms of raw opium were found on the spot. An investigation into the incident is under the way.
DUSHANBE, August 8, 2016, Asia-Plus – Tajik top tank crews participating in the Tank Biathlon World Championship 2016 have failed to reach semi-finals, according to the Ministry of Defense of Tajikistan (MoD). Out of 54 tank crews participating in the competition, 12 have reached the semi-finals that will take place from August 9 to August 11. Tank crews from Angola, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia and Serbia have reached the semi-finals, an official source at a MoD told Asia-Plus in an interview.
