Russian soccer watchdog reacts to bribing allegations
[09:28:00]
MOSCOW, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - The press service of the Russian Football Union (RFS), the national body governing soccer, denied media allegations that Latvian national team player Vitaly Astafyev said Russia had "attempted to bribe players and the leadership of the Latvian Football Federation" before the 2006 World Championship Russia-Latvia qualifying match. "These allegations are unrealistic and absolutely absurd," the press service said. The RFS officially demanded that Secretary General of the Latvian Football Federation Janis Mezeckis elaborate on Astafyev's statement and offer up evidence. "Considering that such allegations damage the reputation of Russian football, the RFS has a right to request that the FIFA disciplinary body fine Vitaly Astafyev for disseminating knowingly false fabrications," the RFS press release said.

Pakistan square series with win
[08:42:00]
The home side were bowled out for 143 after resuming on 114-6 as Pakistan shared the series 1-1. Leg-spinner Danish Kaneria dismissed Daren Powell for figures of 5-46 and Shabbir's treble gave him 4-56. English umpire David Shepherd was applauded off at the end of the game, his 92nd and final Test match. The final day's action lasted just 12.5 overs with West Indies, who won the first Test in Barbados by 176 runs, never looking likely to reach a target of 280 with only their tail-enders to rely on. "The boys really worked hard. To come back [after losing the first Test] was a great effort. Danish and Shabbir took advantage of this wicket and bowled really well," said Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq. To come back in this Test was a great effort Inzamam-ul-Haq More reaction Kaneria found prodigious turn and although Powell hit successive fours off Shabbir in the fifth over of the morning, he departed for 12 when umpire Shepherd adjudged he had been caught at silly point by Yasir Hameed. Shabbir then claimed two wickets in three balls as Courtney Browne (10) and Reon King edged copycat catches to keeper Kamran Akmal. Kaneria ripped a couple of beauties past the outside edge - balls which evoked memories of Shane Warne's famous delivery which dismissed England's Mike Gatting. But he was denied the chance of a sixth wicket when Best attempted to hit Shabbir over the covers and found the waiting hands of Shahid Afridi. I think that the Pakistan Test side is improving From Rich Have your say on TMS It was the final act of a highly satisfactory tour for Pakistan, whose defeat in the first Test, was the only blemish on their record. They won the one-day series 3-0 and would undoubtedly have been more competitive in Barbados but for the absence of three key batsmen, skipper Inzamam, Yousuf Youhana and Shoaib Malik. Inzamam and Shoaib returned for the second game and the former's 117 not out in the second innings was a crucial innings for his side as they achieved their first Test win in the Caribbean since 1988. Former West Indies skipper Brian Lara was named Player of the Series after scoring centuries in both games.

Ganguly appeal is rejected by ICC
[08:56:00]
Ganguly was suspended because of his team's slow over-rate in the fourth ODI against Pakistan last Tuesday. ICC Appeals Commissioner, Michael Beloff QC, considered comprehensive written submissions from Ganguly and the match officials. And he decided the original punishment had to stand. Ganguly had been able to represent his country while the ICC considered his appeal but India opted to leave him out of their final two limited-overs matches against Pakistan. ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed has confirmed that these two matches would be considered as the first two games missed under the six-match suspension. "The initial decision of the match referee to impose this ban clearly had an impact on the ability of the Indian team to determine and select the make-up of its side," said Speed.

Pakistan snatch last-ball victory
[09:13:00]
Pakistan's batsmen staged a thrilling run chase to see off India in Ahmedabad and level the one-day series at 2-2. India looked to have set an impossible target as Sachin Tendulkar's 123 led them to an imposing 315-6 in a match shortened to 48 overs per side. But impressive contributions from all Pakistan's top order helped them make 319-7 - the first time they have ever reached a target of over 300. Inzamam-ul-Haq hit a four off the last ball to win it, finishing 60 not out. Pakistan's hopes of squaring the series had appeared bleak when, after an hour's delay due to a damp wicket, they lost the toss and India chose to bat. Tendulkar promptly took full advantage of some lacklustre bowling to notch up his 38th one-day century. He made a rapid start in partnership with Virender Sehwag, who scored 29 before he was run out by a sharp throw from Younis Khan. Mahendra Dhoni weighed in with an impressive 47 until caught behind by Kamran Akmal off Shoaib Malik, and captain Sourav Ganguly made 18 before he was run out. Tendulkar's classy knock was not enough for India Tendulkar, forced to use a runner as cramp set in, finally fell in the next over as he was bowled by Malik. Rahul Dravid (19) and Yuvraj Singh (35 not out) added useful runs at the end of the innings. Pakistan began their reply with a flurry of ambitous shots, Shahid Afridi (40) and Salman Butt (48) scoring rapidly to bring up the 100 in the 14th over. Abdul Razzaq kept the scoreboard ticking over with a patient 44 before he lofted a catch off Tendulkar's bowling to Murali Kartik. Pakistan had just begun to assume command when they lost two wickets in as many overs. Congrats to Pakistan. A worthy win From VA Have your say on TMS Malik had scored 65 when he lofted a delivery from Kartik to Lakshmipathy Balaji at long on, and Zaheer Khan had Yousuf Youhana (11) caught by the same fielder. Two run-outs then had the tourists wobbling again as Younis perished trying to steal a second run and Akmal fell to a pinpoint throw from Ashish Nehra. Pakistan were left needing three runs off the last over, and then one off the last ball, as the crowd held their breath. Tendulkar did not bring the field in until his final delivery, and Inzamam held his nerve to cut the winning boundary.
