SUGHD REGION
Sughd region, former Leninabad region, was recreated in 1970.
It covers the territory of 25.2 thousand sq. km.
Location - the territory in mostly mountainous. From the North there are Kuraminsky ridge and Mogoltau mountains, from the South - Turkestanish ridge and Zerafshan mountains. It borders on Uzbekistan and Kyrghizstan.
Climate - continental, dry, and depends on altitude change over the sea level. Average temperature of January in the valley is 0,70-10 Ñ, in July is 280-290Ñ.
Annual fallouts are of 150-300 mm. It is cool in mountains. Average temperature: January - 40Ñ, July 260Ñ. Fallouts in mountains (up to 1000 m) 400 mm; average temperature: January (at the altitude of 2500-3000 m) - 90Ñ and in July 150Ñ, annual fallouts - up to 800 mm.
Number of population for January,1, 2002 was 1930.2 thousand persons, including urban population - 504.9 thousand persons an rural population - 1425.3 thousand
persons. Part of the urban population to the total population is 26.1 %, rural - 73.9%.
Population density per 1 sq.km is 76.6 persons.
Regional center is city Khujand with population of 148.7 thousand
persons.
In the area there are 14 rural districts, 10 towns, 20 urban settlements, 93 Jamoat
dehot.
In the region, for the year 2001, there function 196 constant pre0school
institutions, where there are 20.8 thousand children, 880 day schools of general
education, where study over 466.2 thousand pupils, 17 technical schools and other secondary special educational
institutions, where study 8.3 thousand students, and 11 independent institutions of higher education where study 19.4 thousand
students.
422 mass and universal libraries with total fund of books and magazines of about 3490 thousand, 342 club institutions, 6 theatres and 11 museums provide population with cultural-educational services.
The whole housing is of 19370.3 thousand m?. Urban housing is of 8092.6 thousand m?.
In the region there are 138 stationary and 308 out-patient and polyclinic institutions, where there work 4676 doctors of all specialties and 12731 persons of paramedical personnel.
